Acid Reflux Diets

Changing Your Diet Due can Reduce Symptoms of Heartburn and Acid Indigestion.

After being diagnosed with acid reflux symptoms, many people must face the fact of changing their diet. This can be difficult step for some, but not for others. Much of it comes down to your current diet and looking for ways to make changes yet fit into their lifestyle.

Once diagnosed, look into buying a few cookbooks for those with acid reflux. The cookbooks are filled with lists of acceptable and unacceptable food, plus new recipes to try out. Then it's time to begin replacing foods which increase heartburn, stomach acid and acid reflux symptoms with new ones to make eating enjoyable again.

Stay Away from Greasy Foods

Greasy foods or foods that contain too much grease should be avoided, that's a diet for heartburn. These foods go together with acid reflux hand in hand. Too much red meat is not encouraged. If you enjoy a glass of wine or other alcoholic beverages, try to drink them in moderation - alcohol can have adverse effects just like acid reflux can.

Fast foods, like hamburgers, french fries, and chicken nuggets which all contain lots of grease should also be avoided. While this may appear like food most people would miss, once you discover new recipes you'll learn of how to prepare food in different ways and miss the heartburn.

It is not just about avoiding certain foods; but how they are prepared as well.

This does not mean you'll never be able to have hamburger and fries in your acid reflux diet, it's just best or recommended to avoid the foods in general. Everyone is different and your stomach may handle foods that bother someone else. Trying different foods and some experimentation is the only way to really tell.

Some food on the "foods to avoid list" may be fine when prepared another way. For most foods deep frying will not work for those with acid reflux disease. Baking the same foods may be fine. Each person will need to experiment when preparing any of these foods as well.

Check with the Doctor

Your doctor should be able to provide a list of foods to be avoided and a list of foods good for an acid reflux diet.

Eating more vegetables and fruit with no acidic is actually better for those with reflux symptoms. Don't forget to ask about the beverages you should avoid as well. The more you know and understand about the foods you should be eating, and follow through with it the better off you'll be.

At first, you'll go through a period of "missing" whatever foods you want to during the day. But soon you'll begin to enjoy better quality food and will not longer want look forward to greasy fast food, I sure don't miss it! You may even grow to like cooking.
